The "50 State Quarters" program began in 1999, this 10 year program instructed the US Mint to produce 5 quarters per year honoring the 50 States of the Union. State Quarters were to be produced in the order that the individual States ratified the Constitution or were accepted into the Union. Each quarter will, by law, never be produced again. To make room for the State Quarter design, the writing: "Quarter Dollar","Liberty","United States of America" and "In God We Trust" were all moved to the obverse, which still shows the familiar bust of George Washington. A different design for each state in the Union is shown on the reverse.
